Peace he's done John Murphy show. Presented by milk. Hey everybody what is going on today thanks for joining us here and are one buffalo studios here for Louis sports and entertainment of course it is. The John Murphy show presented by no go live from one bills drive himself to podshow along with Donald Jones as usual. Merv. He is in his. You know we are gonna hear from him and a little while I bet you it's a little warmer Houston I was that it is here in violence in little warmer and a little bit easier in Houston. Probably a little bit easier although there's this busy stuff going on the field house at him with a tough round. Lot of no they're not many microphones asking every question exactly if not I was watching a little bit of the Super Bowl festivities last night. And one of the quest is the guy kept asking the patriots. Was how Tom Brady's no. And so we asked our own teammates like. How does Tom Brady smell and and yes Tom Brady if you are flower would you Snow White was type of flat our. What were some of the answers he said well let's go they'd immediately go to dances and community actually damage Damian and those like he smells good I don't know. Getting cancer again. All right so we have Merck down in Houston and he is going to be joining us here and a little while will join us a few times today where you're from all week actually because suitable 51 week. Is here and Merv today is going to have tight ends coach and Western New York native. Ryan Babel he's going to be on with Murphy and you know we've heard from right to Abel lot here in the programmer has good relationship with him. Went to Saint Francis high school his kids still livid Williams they'll believe you know he has roots here he has his FEMA still here but. You know he's been on the patriots happy lefty went to Kansas City to Miami now he's back with doing these coaching tight ends and he's a chance to win a Super Bowl this. How hard that is on the family and I like these coaches for the pages but they live in buffalo. You know the local buffalo man I'm probably I don't know I've met are now but the fact that they're here and they have to root for the patriots it has to be tough. If I'm sure it is at the same time I bet you at least you know. I've heard stories of you know if you have kids when you actually are coach on staff. In kids go to school they're gonna get it every day from what you know his kids are subject that is his dad and a different team and that team has won obviously that so it's a little different in him obviously. Our Chris so it's gonna join Merck as well today we'll hear from him of course buffalo bill's former wide receiver now with the New England Patriots and speaking of former bills. In New England Alan Branch is going to be with rumor and you know Allen was in buffalo for years ago people forget. Alan Branch didn't just coated New England he was there two years ago he won a super ball Donald he's on with the patriots when they beat the Seahawks a couple of years ago. I mean we we hear it all the time people call animate like why he's so many bills players leaving though and they end up in Super Bowls they end up on other teams and their their planes are Rosalia Sony's other teams as the free agency world man it is an if though commitment. I wanna. A challenge that notions am glad you brought that I've read that as well. When Chris Hogan was going off in the AFC championship game there are lots of people who said alt another bill who goes somewhere else and does great. Let's be honest not many bills have actually gone on to other teams and been great and they may have a Super Bowl ring. Like for example of any of the tree wins a suitable rating with the falcons would you say all he has had such a great career out of it. He's been on like three to sense that right. I mean I mean he's he's at least I know he's been on Tuesday and Brian this is the second team desert and out Tennessee went to anyone in defeat that's right. He did become a superstar he may be a winning team right how many former bills have actually. Left in the drought there. And gone on to become superstars of the team's current decrease token the lyrically. And we talked about Chris Hogan a lot last week especially after he won often make game. Because Hogan have like 680 yards this year you know like having LX four under something when he was here so I had a he had at this. More for a year that he would have an awful right but you know that's system friendly like he fits into their system. And they find him at times throughout the course of the season. When they figure out that he's gonna be the good matchup and they'll go to him and he'll end up having a good game which he did against the Steelers I mean NASA's how their offense works we're not talking about a guy who can go to any team in the league can be considered a number one receiver is not an off superstar in his league you know he just fits in. And when he has a good game. He ended up having a great game. On one of the biggest stages of the you know also now with sticks out to everybody like why don't let Chris hold ago he's not a superstar honestly nights ago at wide receiver and he works art. That he does well what do you celebrate throwing and has Tom Brady volatile I mean you can eat. You can ask for more as a wide receiver so it was let's not think that he's a superstar right now I agree and I and I would think that in the Super Bowl he. He did not catching two or three passes and and be quite. Let's sum let's go back to with the decision when it was made to not match the offer put yourself back in the bills position. At that time it was clearly the right decision to not give him four million dollars a year why wouldn't he wasn't going to be forming out receiver on this team. Right yeah I mean you're talking about a number three or number four wide receiver why would you give him four million dollars a year when you have other positions. Not that it's gonna run a lot exactly he need to lock up your you know linemen which is what they were focused on at the time you have to lock those guys up in a run for in the offense and just in the NFL in general you have to have an offensive line. To help out even if you have Tom Brady if you don't have an office the line. But guess what we all know what happens when Tom Brady gets pressured and we've seen it twice in the Super Bowl when he lost to the giants twice they both of those and even last year and AC to receive game. They've lost to Denver because he was being pressured you have to have a strong offensive line is so the bills felt like we need to make sure our offensive line is intact we have a good offensive lines why would you give your number three or number four wide receiver a guy who's playing situation oh. The GAO's plane specialties 4001000 it just doesn't. Make it makes sense to me the only thing that I. I said to me that those that are done different and I wish it would have. Was navy tender him a higher offer in the B than it compensation in return a second round maybe than the patriots don't even go after him. But that was the only criticism to me there was never a chance of you not matching four million for personal I just wasn't worth that that's that was value was and he's being he's he's playing well for the patriots again it but it goes back to say. There's not really been anybody I can think whoever Mario Williams Donte Whitner who we gonna talk about that has actually left the hill NC in the drought error who's gone on to be like some sort of superstar certainly no quarterbacks have only the only person you can think of as mark summit that's that's out. I agree with that one that that would be a good one that be the only when he could anger and I'm good call on that. And you know the bills had a glut at running back and obviously there are a lot of reasons why Marchand on a one up lead but that is the only one during drought there I could think of other than that I don't really think it's just. It frustrates me when people say go out there we go yet another bill who goes somewhere right there really haven't been any. Not that I talked about China that he's only one that went on to be like a superstar in this life and still is and Osama you've. They do mistake on him he has the and he was in Houston like over in Europe some of these accelerators. The funniest thing ever try to fight with my eyes at his house on a prize money yeah I did he was like rallies why he was willing liked and the bustle is coming Indy Lights are swerved out of the way is the funniest thing ever I heard you talk about it he's actually. A terrific team right great great teammate great team in anybody that's ever been one of his teammates that he. And you've never heard anything other Internet you know it doesn't matter who you are on the team. Everybody's like don't do right there is a great team me and you know people just have that is that perception of him in the media and in the fan bases because of things that have happened to him why was here. And then him not wanting to speak to the media. But it is what it is man that guy's a great teammate and he's very deal with this money which we know so many NFL guys. Well and speaking of that part of that reason is because of what he did during civilly that's a week we're on us now on. Like you said you get some crazy questions coming your way I mean I read one today civil was asking. Julian cattlemen. Who would win an actual fight a patriot or falcon if there was a falcon a patriot and I guess settlement response was when we get that done. So old musket Unita means I think it's an easy answer that we'll get a Murphy who is down it's a globally a little later in the program. Or hear from some other patriots as well of course Tom Brady Devin the quarry as well we'll hear from him. And then from the falcons side of things Matt Ryan Vick be easily Julio Jones will hear from all of them. As we go on in the program. Matt Wright is a guide it's really kind of been on my mind throughout this weekend we talked a lot about Tom Brady yesterday Donald wanna focus a little bit on Matt Ryan today we put a Twitter poll up. At John Murphy show on Twitter by the way you can follow Donald and tweet and give give your your twittering and. So my Tweeter might sweeter name is at the aid Jones won nine so follow me and you know don't say anything to do too muted. I think right if I could happen do you block people are just mean it depends on what they say writes I would give lots of you was as I agree. Most people it if I'm tired of this one right within an eagle over the top he crossed the line that you think you can say whatever. Then you get the block and then you're you're you're just not here but if you go to John Murphy show on. Twitter we have a poll question up in the poll question. Asks if Matt Ryan wins Super Bowl 51 will you consider him an elite NFL quarterback. Three chances three options are here yes basically yes he needs to win this that I will consider in that. You can say no he already is he does at the winner loses one of the Matty courteous elite. Or no he needs to do more. What I find interesting is 55%. Not only do we have the plurality we have the majority today yet I don't do we have the majority so far. 55% of you say. Yes he needs to win this and that will consider him an elite quarterback this goes back to the discussion we had yesterday. A bowel. The legacy of quarterbacks how much it means to win a Super Bowl in where they can put you in that excellent right now. We're gonna throw it down a job Murphy standing by live. In Houston getting ready for Super Bowl 51 more likely says it's probably a lot warmer there. That it is here in buffalo Merv hope your enjoy the sun Java and they got a lot of work hating it should be a fun week re down there. All sunshine here and radio row cell Donald but thanks for much it is tonight's outside its. 6570 degrees and sunny outside and so on the by minute walk across the street from our hotel and radio row we'd get insurance and sunshine week. My you producer Jeff Matthews and I got to detail last night immediately possible to Mitt made parked on the street where we caught the yeah. The patriots media session what they call opening night it's analog media do that problem opening night but that's for respect our Monday night here in Houston. Yen on you had a chance to speak with several players on both sides of things so far but what about the overall team atmosphere. I thought I read somewhere yesterday it seemed like the falcons were being very very guarded in any thing they said not to. We give Bill Belichick and the patriots any type of material but what did you get the sense of either of the players the teams of people you've been around. Yes I think darted is the right word you know again I was in orbit I did make the falcons media session but. Patriots as you might expect and have a whole lot to say I talked with Chris Hogan the former bills wide receiver talked with celebrates the former bills. Defense and tackle and I talked with Brian Cabell via patriots as tight ends coach who we will hear from at the bottom of the sour. And yet they didn't wanna get too much into this game and strategy or tactics and didn't want to reveal too much about what their plans were for this Sunday. That's to be expected you know I I think it's an interesting culture their new when Lyndon. That's one of the questions I asked the both Hogan and and Alan Branch and code today able you know what makes that culture different why is it different they're doing it. And certainly what we haven't had buffalo over a decade and a half but what most teams in the NFL they haven't. You don't quite get a strong answer I mean when you hear the interview Brian Cabell I think at the bottom of the hour. You'll hear him talk about how you know it's it's just the kind of Workman like approach in the approach it the is he said like most teams in the NFL but some it's going to be different their right can't just be the quarterback can't just be the head coach summed got to be a little bit different about them and so. You know it. I'd I don't think you I wouldn't anticipate them given up too many secrets I'm receiving a spoke with a great amount of respect. For the Atlanta Falcons and their offensive firepower. For all of the weapons that the falcons bring in the field this Sunday but it and get the sense that they're gonna give up many secrets about their. Game plenary of the process of putting that game plan together this week. Merv we all know Tom Brady and in his fame and stardom and where he is today. Because of his career in the NFL. We all know that when he gets his suits his Super Bowl week in the big media day everybody crowds around him and asked him a lot of questions but another guy. That is really become a famous and has been down there the last couple of years is that big Tom Brady guy looks just like Tom Brady beat you to get a chance to talk with him. I'm sorry Ed I could near you battle over your frontier. There's a guy who's who goes who's been going to the last couple of super bulls and he'd like to Telecom radio. Did not have a guy with a mask down. Be honest we Chris so pressed for a good fit we got their cattle leaked yesterday because we just rolled into town. There was that circus sideshow going fake Tom Brady there was a guy. Dressed up for the wedding gown there was so. One of the manages a Cooperman and I think one of the Manning Brothers dressed up head to toe and assume. That looked like it was made out of cash one dollar bills. We we are kind of pressed for time we didn't have a chance to dive into the the circus which certainly was there was a great setting for opening nighter BD last night via the Astros ballpark minute maid park richest couple blocks away. It was a great setting there was a lot of room they spectators there. You know from the stands at the ballpark now which provide me I can't imagine why you would want to come and watch. You know what your budget football players answer questions especially if you can hear the questions and answers but. There they were you know I guess celebrity watching but yeah I didn't get a chance unfortunately due to get together with they come. John Murphy joining us from Houston he is there for Super Bowl week Merv I've been referring to a suitable Jet Li it's Super Bowl L I mean we at the Roman numerals thing here I love the fact they went back to the Roman numerals Lester didn't like it that they you know I understand why they want with the number but may not the Roman numerals I wanna keep their Roman numerals on vegetables. Yeah keeps on your toes doesn't it it takes me back to a high school days you know right you had to learn Roman numerals than that. It helped it I think it helps me when you know if remember the L equals fifty in the you know C equals 100 right well. I think that's right let's get that through an LCD and the tellers remember Merv fifty under 500000 LCD out of it they America what I'm asking about Matt Ryan real quick because we talked about it today. We talked a lot about Tom Brady yesterday his legacy and things like that what about Matt right here is. Yeah he's 3031 years old I was kind of surprised when I thought about that bought back 31 already for Matt Ryan he's had quite the career already but. This team need to have this Super Bowl win or at least a super wal ballwind for some sort of validation for his career because you know how much those rings are attached to quarterbacks legacies. Yeah that's a good question I think you know I was thinking about that on the way out here yesterday O Ryan doesn't get the sort of the tension many quarterbacks do even though he's been good you know leads. Obviously a candidate if that the leading candidate for most valuable player this year but. I was looking back you know and the at a fills the top 100 players and fell back on top 100 players met right wasn't even that was going into this season. And I think it's a case where his performances may be. Outshine the recognition notoriety he's received over the last few years. I think he had sort but her early career lol where people kind of wrote them off as we all are apt to do you know the quarterback in the world and rested. Labeled the young quarterback imposter number good players that may have happened to Matt Bryant after early career low he did a lot of weapons amendment. The falcons are kind of floundering but but he's been good. You know and he's been good for a couple of years now about just this year is he leads. You know certainly is Super Bowl win will cement that but I think he's really good I think he's really really adamant up five quarterbacks in the game certainly this year and probably over the last couple years. He has some great weapons on that team as well art Murphy lots of stuff coming from you and you said yep rank eagle coming down the bottom of the hour and he got caught up with Chris Hogan Alan Branch some former bills out there so we're looking forward to it would talk to get in not just a few minutes from now actually. OK thanks I felt I think you that is John Murphy he is lying down in Houston. I don't detect what they that the convention center may be a musher from his energy stadium I don't think they. That's really on the radio you know radio row with somewhere else in my predicament I'm pretty majority sentiment is okay that's I think that's the probably are but it's. Boy it's grown it's become such a big big deal when all these different stations down there and you know a lot of ties with the do you Donald is. These players the former players. They go around current players from other teams that promote products so they article every station they can't seem to promote their product but for the guys who were down their doing shows it's great to get a different perspective he didn't talk to people so it's critical week for. I mean this is definitely. I actually spoke at an event last year and this event. It was about forty different NFL players. And there was probably a hundred different seals of big companies and they were all trying to market their different products and so they Revere. To hear me speak which was the cool thing. But that's what it's all about you know there's so many different companies down it to promote products and they bring the players down they pay the players to go down there and and be on the TV and be on the radio and different things like that. And so is his brightness is of huge show now. You know it's like there's so much in the buildup to the actual game and then once that game comes there's like I. Some people are only for the commercials right to carry on top of that we Alia what I was watching some the festivities last night a started to see likes and to rebuild and to. No garrido they have like one of the best commercials every year every Super Bowl you know slapping they're probably an avid limited. We'll see we'll see where that goes it's been an interesting last for years some of the commercials they have been and even because they didn't toe the line. A little that area we talk remark about Matt Ryan of the four that. We talked about some bills have gone on elsewhere who actually performed well I think that. There's not a lot of bills in the drought there who've actually gone on in bullet and really good with other teams but. Pat in north title and as one that we haven't brought up I think it's good what shall get to him right now on the first one up to date and the job of each what's up. Jason Peters. Yet here here's where here's pat this is why I don't include him outside its affair you're right he is gone out and been great he's been a lot of lot of pro balls he's considered one the better left tackles over the last ten years in this league. The reason I don't count him in one of these he's gone elsewhere have been great. He forced his way out it's like the bills didn't wanna re sign him or didn't want them so I just I just I just put him in a different category that makes cents. You know you're forced them out because it won't be in. Is that correct top prospect look at polls I think a. What do you mean he was playing left tackle which is what he has. We're also hope it. Your argument at all in telling me Italy was in the news right. I don't think that you. And it kind of peaceful acute for the the only trouble and all plausible but for now. Right he did right but what why they used him where he's being played now and he all he wanted to do was get out of buffalo want more money that's all he. He did it twice and he finally got out. I. Portable here on the back when he an ethernet ports are by no. But yeah I agree at all there were gaps where there are widely assumed that your guests and back. And I hope it it is immoral and he never had a chance. Problem number two well and I. Let me ask you question pat would you have paid Chris Hogan four million dollars to stay on this roster knowing that the production he would give you with this quarterback that they have here compared to the one in New England. And the system they run would you pay and that. But call. Alcohol I I wouldn't I wouldn't interview afterward you're more than a minute while while. I just think that's fair debt that's fair if you if you tender him and so there's different power he has remorse dead I mean if you if you put that in there where you did some conversation like I understand that come. But the fact of giving him four million dollars a year like he's not even there. He's not there at number two our receivers not that the that we all know that the tight ends in that system are the number one our receivers you know so. Crock is out Martellus Bennett is the number one of our receivers did you have to an element. Then you have I guess you can put Chris Hogan in their Damien. Danny Amendola those guys in the same room. But you know the patriots the way they run their system financially because they have that guy Tom Brady. They won't they don't have to pay guys so much money because guys will stay there because they love to win it right so the fact that they are so far under the cap they can afford to say. You know what we identify this guy as a guy who really fits in our system we need another one receiver that fits in our system and Chris Hogan is probably. Going to be that Julian atom in moving forward. Because doing cattlemen I don't know how old he is but he's giving up there and I'm sure they're gonna phase him out at some point soon in the next couple of years so they identified could hold it. That's probably being the future's so they went out and do what they had to do yet. I think. Chris Hogan has meet. Himself what he has a lot of ways in this league and we in the library credit to Brady no doubt about that you make some now. You know what he's doing in the game as ours on the field but my point is that. Chris Hogan came in this league of very very very. You know I say under rated unheralded guy would've plate and scrap and claw for everything he got right to even get to a point to have a team like New England wanna pay you that. The guy deserves credit and that and I and I think that that's that's part of the reason bills fans still root for him. I mean if you got a roof Oregon right who and anybody who comes into this league the way he did that guy that. Played lacrosse he played DB. And how it's you know and then he killed he comes in with the Miami Dolphins they end up calling 7-Eleven because he's always open down there one on hard knocks. He gets cut and he comes here he's on the practice wise you know and then when he was on the practice squad here you know we work with them a lot. And he just works hard he works hard and you know he was getting his opportunity and it in the offense and when he had his opportunity to make plays he did that. But these still identified him as a course special teams guy and number 304 when our receivers so you just not gonna pay that guy. Four million dollars a year and a number three or four a guy that is a key special teams guys they don't get paid in this league and so are you just how the league works you knock them and overpaid guy. Who you so that means that you would have overpaid him. Paid him four million dollars a year have been this year. You're talking about. If you could bring back Robert Woods and you know you're gonna to you he's gonna command what eight or nine million dollars a year may be ten million dollars a year. At the as a number two wide receiver. And then eventually having to pay your number one guys and reluctance if you know if you ain't gonna redo his contract you know so you talk about three wide receivers getting paid. Multiple million dollars a year and you can't do that and is he he just hit. It's another excellent feedback we've kind of starts on the which I like and he says it's one Winfield. Someone else and make and it's like having. There are some good players who flat there's no doubt that we freed he works you can keep everybody there are some good players I would not what Antoine Winfield in the super stardom that is the just. March on as the cream of the crop talking about on its other guys have gone on the and good evening good players Chris that it player. Think it's stretching it a little overboard exaggerating how did these players actually are accurately buffalo simply because they're not Buffalo Bills. To me to what it was a nice player in his career to agree and racecar he actually won a super blight like what you are greeted. He really he had some nice moments he wasn't a superstar in this week after buffalo he was a nice player and that's what happens sometimes it greens you can't keep everybody they leave they become good players have good careers elsewhere. I think Marshall college is in is the gold standard Odyssey and who's left. It's becoming really really great player BAT's Peters there like I say. It's a different scenario with him there are a couple of 2.2 but let's I just think it's horrible there to keep saying. All my god look at all these players who lead buffalo and want to such great stardom Ellsbury they simply don't they don't. They don't gonna start on the going to be good players on some new of course you know is in the Patriot Act in that game. And him he's starting for a Super Bowl team he has never investigate okay is that a good player has been a bit I was gonna pay the featuring the kind of dark money that Tennessee paid aunts are exactly. Indeed when you think the top guards in this leak into the beach's name doesn't come up he's a good player when you think about the top guards. I mean Andy would be too does does he doesn't come up in and that conversation right. You know slightly averaging. Exactly. You know so when you have a guy like Richie attack you know you have to lock that guy in instead of paying a guy like Chris Hogan for me now the. I'm in sorry about that item in a job there I mean Joseph tweets and he says my my bills regret list lynch Peters in Greer I think it's a good list. He says still wonder about burden Orleans that's one that you should be glad that Michael. Right I believe Diaz and his terrorist network out. Come up to anything close to what they thought he'd be right side I mean he just hasn't and Dow now down there you know one guy that for me united hasn't been on a team a winning team. But in our suitors yapping was conceit the Tom and I wished he'd he would have been able to stay here he's not a superstar in any means he's not gonna start any means but I just think he's good I'd could seek the and really would have been a defeat in this amnesty I agree completely again and again middle how money's got to pick and choose your athletes succeed in these people don't understand that teams will overpay you know when they see they they haven't meet somewhere and they haven't got this is a good player. They will overpay that guy and you can't fault the player for leaving you you can't I mean players wanna be paid. At the end of the day players want to be Peyton wanna get the top money is somebody offers you six or seven million dollars a year. And nobody else is offering you that. You're gonna probably take that money. All right we'll take your phone calls on this 80305588552. By fifty Murphy is coming back up he is out of Houston. At Super Bowl 51 south of hot Jill I'm informer this week Donald Jones sit let me. The discussion is our facilitator role and after this. Welcome back to the John Murphy show right here from one bills drive here in the one buffalo studios sell the pot GO with Donald Jones thanks a lot for joining us today is all week long as we have your Super Bowl 51 coverage Gloria. Merck is down Houston we'll get with him in just a second. He's got a special guest standing by as we. Really talk about what's going on between these two teams New England. Atlanta the quarterbacks Matt Ryan we put it would double today does he need to win that Bryant is secure is legacy is only quarterback in your mind. At I had adjusting the set it was he has to win that. You know I think with Matt Ryan I think he needs to do more even if he wins this I think he needs to do more because. We talked about this yesterday I want to see what's going to happen when Shanahan is not there next year. You know is is he the same quarterback is he still spreading the ball around to everybody like he is doing right now. With that guys and and as the office coronet and it's not the same as he goes back to trying to do is lean on Julio Jones and you can't call that UK column an elite quarterback because. He says leaning on Leo don't you know and that's what he was that's what he did early in his career when he had Tony Gonzales we have Roddy White you know he's just leaned on those guys and I think it really hurt him. When they got into situations like they did against the 49ers. When they lost in the in the playoffs against the 49ers when they were up big in the 49ers came back and beat him right in all right he just was leaning on those guys. And it wasn't enough to come back again or to him to gain. It's amazing now when you think about quarterbacks and Halladay. How we can view them either early thicker later they're in their career depending that they when he suitable Brady 11 so early in his career when another one a couple years later okay apps they made three out of four but the after he got the second one I think oh my god he's so young already put him right up there regardless if it had much of a career. Matt Ryan. Has done a lot he's arguably got back I have to look at the stats. If you took Matt Bryant's first 45 years in this league. Apparently I mean it would probably be pretty favorable it might be better but some of the best at what you don't last but he aid is at the Super Bowl so we don't put him in that category. Aaron Rodgers won a Super Bowl 27 in only his third year starting in Italy. From then on he almost doesn't have to win one for you to put him there because of having that great imagine he had won one yet. 11 yeah yeah we've had our eyes now is Matt Ryan if he hadn't won one yet. We probably probably be talking about him in the same boat is is as Matt Ryan but the thing is Philip Rivers hasn't even I know nobody is still very in the elite. Quarterback Aaron and I think to me but maybe not necessarily right now. Right are it's a listen John Murphy started Houston and he has patriots coach one that is a local connection. Here in Western New York. It's Super Bowl with the patriots coach gable Western New York native here for you told European Super Bowl tickets it's pretty amazing you know I'm very blessed to be here for the fifth time. It ever get old. No. No not at all it's it's really honored and privileged takes a lot of hard work. Dedication long year. Really got to have a lot of physical mental toughness to grind out a year and professional football and you know very honored to be at this point right now. Your bio says you learned. I guess born and well and Ontario what you're telling me you're really a western new Yorker right duke which he spent four hours it and it was a it was a really really short stint there. But raised on my my grandparents my mom and west Seneca. And grew up there my entire life went to University of Rochester and and and moved on from their two. A lot of different places in the coaching world is it one step but saint Francis of Athol springs coach Jerry Smith and yet you know Jerry Smith Johnson Bennett Tony Georgina. Had a lot of fond memories there and that's Saint Francis high school. All of those guys a lot. Of course I believe the polian Findlay is in doubt like a new stadium there and you are pretty good buddies with Brian polian the former about a coach is known. Yep good friend. Was good player back in a day good football coach. And good friend now. There's one part of your background I think would be particularly interceded to Buffalo Bills paid coach in itself. I think it was your first coaching job you were restricted earnings coach at William and Mary Alice surely restricted. Yeah at the pay them half of no Clinton won very much. Yeah idea. Ever nervous to be hired by accumulate cock and Russ newsman. When Marion and and Sean was a fifth year seniors there. Tough competitive player. Really a hard worker. Very good person. Wish him all the best McDermott did the bill's new head coach who we talked with coach late cock and he told us that John walked down. Eventually worked his way into a full scholarship at William and Mary and he talked a lot about the things you mention it kind of high character players for the right. Yeah you know I was only with him for the for the one season which was his final year but. You know tough hard working competitive selfless good team leader. Was good player for for Wayne merry. Brian gable the Italians took to the patriots tell me about your entry to the NFL did you go right away to the patriots coming in no well yeah into the league yes. It was a Michigan State for two years under Nick Saban. And then had the opportunity come here and interview with bill and and his staff. Fortunate to it to land the job. Was much higher pay and then restricted earnings it went and married but. You know try to. Gotta do it I was asked to do work really hard helped the team out anyway I couldn't you know just hope to stick around and you know bill's doing great Kraft family's been great. Very fortunate to be part of this organization kind of spread your wings or for a couple of years to get a chance to be offensive coordinator a couple of stops yep yep. You know. Sometimes when you come. From a successful program to get opportunities. And got to to bounce around a little bit and very excited to be here. Work and back into England again with this organization. Some great opportunity to be here and very blessed with the experience you've had around lead and we we scratch your head an awful lot. About this question what's different about knowing that what makes it the team that can get this seven of these if you'd be deprived of these. I think it's it's not easy you know it's it's. Being successful in this league is is not an easy proposition. Our requires a tremendous amount teamwork commitment. Execution. Ability to perform under pressure got to have a lot of mental and physical toughness. And you know that being said you can do all those things and it's still tough to win its. You know it's a tough league. It's it's everybody at their best in and you gotta be at your best every single day. Outside looking in you always hear like Belichick's mantra of do your job is it really based on. Yeah I you know everybody has job at doing in the organization whether via an assistant coach coordinator quarterback tight end receiver someone on defense. You know someone working in the locker room video guy we all have our jobs to do. And you just try to do on the best attendance and help the team out what would you say how do you keep it together year after year after year I mean. You win Super Bowl sometimes people might get distracted after that white is and well I'm not really sure you know I just know that. No we go India says every game. As its own entity and try to do our very best every single week every single day. I don't look too far behind you know to look too far ahead. You have a challenge that week that day and that's what we try to do all of us are committed to give our best suited to the guy next to us. And you know you hope it turns out for the best that Bryant gave the patriots tight ends coach in your group you have a familiar Western New York a name and face wrapped Gradkowski who was not available this week with. Tell us how he's doing first of all and you know just what kind of player well you know. Robs great person. A tough competitive selfless guy. Obviously has a lot of talent now leads the news unfortunately got injured this year so he's he's rehab and doing the things that he needs to do. But you know very good leader for our football team. Good player but just so a really good person too I got a lot of respect for rob. Put yourself in the minds of your opponents and maybe look at Robin think about what a matchup nightmare he must present. Others and there's. There's a lot of good players and you know in this league and in each week you get played differently based on that the team that your plan and what they like to do and how they wanted to try to take guys away or not take guys away. You know it's such it's such a week to week deal. What's the blast that defense coordinator. What's he do against attendants were to go against good receivers out as you want you know it just it just depends on week to week. Martellus Bennett now is your top tight and tell us about him and what he's brought to your roster. True professional. Came in worked real hard to learn our system acquiesced. To our team in the way we do things and has been a pleasure to work with. Coach is said it doesn't get old coming to the Super Bowls but the you know you look around even the room here tonight and in this filled with media filled with distractions. Your 45 days away from the finish line but you guys seem to have the formula how to get ready to play Super Bowl it's. Well you know like I said we just try to stay at the task at hand in and you know. Probably not much different than a lot of guys and just try to really stay focused not what we need to do. How we need to do things. Prepares hard as we can get our players ready to play. Really don't make any excuses you just you know you keep your head down to grind and and you do the best you can. Good lucky it's great to finally see face to face after all these great to me you didn't. They've all of the and. In the patriots tight ends coach John Murphy show at the Super Bowl on Buffalo Bills radio. I thank you very much are of great to be there with a Western New York native. He went the secret is high school so just like I did yesterday we heard your vehicle Anderson I'm looking at B Montana went Spezza quite a few guys come Odyssey for its high school. Get free some love here. This is crazy to think about this Donald to NFL GM's. Bull there's only 32 of those jobs in the world to them right and went to Saint Francis high school in Buffalo, New York Tom telescope the chargers. And David Caldwell jag. Is pretty amazing and that you Brian polian who's Bill Simon who's the head coach at Nevada. He still there right now Lou tasker Steve's son who's playing and CFO now he's there. Jim Kubiak went there late for the Naval Academy play the NFL was with the colts for a little while that a bunch hockey players spectacle and a Todd Krieger Aaron Miller. Amazing right and then Elsa you're like oh there's an assemblyman analysts who at at at some guy became President Obama. That this and I I think that. I every time. Murphy as a guest and you know Merv and Jane produces it might alienate these from western new York and I'm like well it's how many people. I never knew people were you before I got to buffalo I mean I didn't know anybody around buffalo and now and I did here is likely is from buffalo only. Yeah like everybody's from buffalo now a lot of people. If there was a study got a few years ago that I read that said they had they listed cities United States' top ten cities. That people. Leave from and then another group of top ten cities of people who come back to after the couple was in bowl top ten release that people leave it's in the top ten. Yeah I wanna go somewhere else it's also in the top ten a city's people come back to after living somewhere crying when they love living here. One of my good friends from growing up now he lives in Florida. And she worked at a doctor's office and she was telling me that. The lady that worked the air with. I guess her husband was from buffalo right and so her husband was in the military down there and they were moving back up here as soon as he was getting out of the military they were moving back it seems like moving back to buffalo from Florida back to what you excited and I can use him like wait what it when you first told me that like daily to move back from Florida I'm a month he you do when it's the third day. You back to buffalo from Florida who does that. Now well listen. On that as we as we cannot a year and a quick story that so my wife and I went to see. Actually this weekend they show called Elvis lives and it's pretty cool to have. Elvis and they don't break character it's obvious or as late regional shows and the guy up there who's doing Elvis says they won it's great to be here in buffalo although vices by the way. My music director Joseph sugar she'll also from buffalo and and he just. Leftist recently Mike Ellis is music director and doesn't happen with period from buffalo that their ego at wit lots of roots there he just heard from one of the guys from Western New York prying gable another former western new Yorker like Rob Gronkowski who's gone on. To have success some people played the bill's not necessarily from Western Europe we talked about them today we take your phone calls when we return on the job or the show 8030550. 88 fact that he too I think. Matt Ryan let's talk a little bit more about Chris Hogan and other bills that left him what you're rooting for days as far as their success on Sunday in the league. We're back with more of that John Murphy GO. I welcome back the show yourself but you O'Donnell Joseph Torre back out to the phone lines we got to atop the Cheektowaga. Speaking of places they realized greatness because of talent the Prius greatness I am from Cheektowaga town so. You know. I I could play an event. It is if you hit let's towns. If you are surrounded by a good players and a great recorder picked you're gonna look good joke if oust it was plain off or they get it yet they keep the should per share. I think he'd be very very good but of course not of course Tom Brady helps everybody me makes them a lot better look no offense to my partner is sitting here. Okay he played in the NFL and that's incredible dream of Tom Brady was throwing to you. I mean you view on another much banners and now you're in buffalo right at. Patrick if you have a quarterback that is placing the ball where you need to be to psych out and Green Day when you have a guy that is putting it will UK you have no choice but to catch the ball. Right at me you're going to be a good received notices out and then when you when you're in a system like that. That really finds the matchups. A system that allows you to be great. You're going to be good player I mean. I do think Rob Gronkowski would be very good body good I mean I got what does he. First ballot halting conversations that people talking about them but I'd be doing here. He'd be good I mean crap rock and house seats in the I mean everybody says he's the best tied him in the game for me I mean it's him Tony Gonzales. You know you grew up before me so you probably have more guys in that conversation but the guys that I've been able to watch Robin's house he Tony Gonzales the best. Yeah I have to say I think Kellen Winslow senior universally kind of came on him an Ozzie Newsome re probably the cute cat. Started to rebel revolutionize the position a little bit yeah. But Gonzales took it to a new level and then Antonio Gates is that after that got him and got right cows eat these guys Jimmy Graham now. Do you let these guys are doing right these basketball players I've got solidly and basketball Antonio Gates play basketball right. Pre crazy. I mean these items that are athletic. You know for me Hewlett Iraq Gradkowski. Is he's like elusive. And loose leaf that psyche it does not look fast. Let's slow black right you know people don't catch him he catches the ball would like to enter people hanging all over his back. A key catches everything one hand it doesn't matter from people just. He is that real matchup problems you guys can not match up with that there's been nobody it has been able to do airwaves has had some success there when it. But not on a consistent basis you cannot set that guy down he's going to catch a touchdown in the game and this is how it is. Well the colors point was really more about. Hold in the reason why usually what duties because of Marie knows that disagree here but I'll say this again let's let's you mentioned earlier. He didn't have a lights out here Chris Hogan he had. Just a bit of a better year than he ever had when he's in buffalo be quite honestly he caught about the same and overpasses he's a forty to fifty catch guy. He just had Moriarty at 650 yards and bubbly topped out at. Just under 500. If people it's it's a combination which makes him so good it's a combination of having Tom Brady. And being in that system so when you've when you have that system that he catches a thirty catches when you have that he is at 41 about two years ago. The 41 for like four of them aren't. I mean guys are a lot of touchdowns and four touchdowns each each year exactly so we're we're not talking about superstar numbers and I'll start numbers. We're talking about. Average to even below average numbers. At wide receiver mislead the thing is he just had a big game on a big moment on a big states in the stakes out and everybody's mind but back to what I was saying though. And and and knowing that it's breaking the back Soros and when you when you look at the system and and you look at Brady. They find a match ups and the guys local law because Tom Brady will find you when your open the system is designed. For you to find a match at all you gotta do is beat you're got to speech or die and they have so many weapons. That you can't cover you can't double team one person we you double team one person we're gonna go to somebody else that's how they designed this system you can set down all of our receivers. They're right back to chemical off that is how it is. How many players had more catches for the patriots this year. The personal. Me I would see probably element and then he was number one it 98. Yeah and he he he averages around and come element maybe Martellus. He had 55 just a few more and that's right and James like a running back like who had sixty. And mr. Murkowski did not play likable season you may have you know he could have surpassed them he had 25 Chris Hogan was the number four. Option I guess you'd say it's our numbers are concerned works right in that office about when he was in buffalo its not exactly EV seventy suddenly became. You know an instant superstar but he is Tom Brady and by the way the other reason why people remember. Because of what he did in buffalo over topless upon deal more that shows up you know think about as well I we had a lot more we're gonna go down to Houston where it talk Murphy again we take more your phone calls for a top Matt. Matt Ryan we got a Twitter Paula. John Murphy show. Is Matt Ryan he leaked that he went support that he wants. As you are ideally partisan got a lot more to do check out Jabber B show on Twitter itself sports on Twitter if you go what does it down DHL he's a Joan. One non CIO is supposed forget which I guess and that's ahead we'll talk after this.
