Investigators. Presented by the end Pete Carroll heart. Good morning welcome true the investigators and her peers. Tell you GR Sports Radio 550 and amassed Jeanne. Call lines are open in 03055888550. To 550. And I'm not really sure how to introduce spying. Every day partner here. Enormous and appears in cargo bay but you know. Every day is a grumpy day for mr. crank okay all the Yankee thing old man my wife's not happy with you whatsoever she's there you have your meaning mean as this grumpy old man and that is so not true. I'm sure that. I listen maybe figured oh want to come here and use every day's. It's mean it's you know what in and clearly you're having trouble figuring out which one of your emotions you hoping to work on a daily base is if you come by the parents knowing how much you miss me when I'm away and then. Team loses. A game last night and if you think I guess my point is if you think ribs his bitter. On a daily basis just because you should see him this morning talk to him this morning. Tough on last night buddy first thing you said when we got out of the car was did you watch that joke last night. And what are your thoughts three nothing after the first period well I can tell you one person that's more bitter than me here in buffalo. And that's the coach I mean. It's. And you know. It's frustrating first is for sure today that the players in that locker room know. They know they they they've the played you know getting up three nothing. I set against Pittsburgh Penguins I set out a tweet last night at three nothing and then what did they expected and is said the penguins grow boozing last. And it's so a lot of people responded with a abilities that. There's still two more periods and this is the Pittsburgh Penguins and I kind of thought to myself I was like yeah maybe a little premature on the island. But it was a three goal lead and I didn't think that it was. And you see the chances that this particular tied it up in the first. We're gonna do video breakdown you know and one of the place result at almost in a goal. But. They could have tied it up and first I mean three nothing lead or not it's not like Pittsburgh was. Out of that game by any means. Well you know what I thought they were three nothing. Yeah you're up three nothing against the Pittsburgh Penguins you know what I did in between the first and second intermission. I was looking at where the sabres would be in the standings by. Gaining those two points because they're pretty much guaranteed right there up three nothing how they lose a game when they're up three nothing. So I was already doing my eighth mile an hour. Derek Jeter and now what are that are gay you've had they had no no respected even and getting two point going in that game nobody thought they would have won. One necking us you know what here's the thing though I I disagree with that because I think that. Throughout this entire year the sabres have been that team. That have played really good teams really high end teams very well and they've had success this year and it didn't surprise me com ice outplayed this up I was a gambling man. I would never bet against the sabres I would never bet against the sabres because I think that this team can beat anybody in the national hockey. I just keep coming on here and it's like. You know. He's the guy from Groundhog Day. Over Bill Murray I feel like Bill Murray coming to work every day and it's it's like I wanna talk something positive I wanna talk about how great. This team is moving forward but. You know. They they are just so inconsistent and their and their play that it's you know I mean you come to work in year you're like did lead. I'm not quite sure did we actually really lose that game 43. It it's frustrating I'm sure in the like if we on the outside are frustrated and I can I can only imagine the frustration. That that is happening. With the coaching staff and in the dressing room also. 803055888550. To 550 Andrew Peters and Craig are very here in the investigators if you wanna call and in. Venter voice your frustration on the sabres game last night what are your thoughts and a very disappointing because go you know at three nothing. At three nothing I was doing the exact same thing I'm sitting there doing the math and then where would this put them. I start scoreboard watching who else is islanders lost my yeah I know islanders lost we would we were going to win so crunching the numbers on site near one hole were only three points haute. Three points out. Then all of a sudden. Reality kicks over to where it where did it start for you mean if you're watching the game I mean you analyze the games we analyze the games together we watch a lot of plays who watched the goals against you watch the goals for. Where for you where did start I mean for me wanna order stars from me this team this team and we were talking about a four. They seem to have there. Offensive. Abilities and and knack for the net has seen how that stuff together I mean I think. All Riley's school jocks gold the plays in the creativity that this team. In the offensive zone can then you know what they can do right it's in the defensive zone I mean it. It just seems like that are that are. Caught watching week too much and the players that you expect to be responsible in their own zone they're responsible in their own zone they're in position in the one play last night. We were analyzing and it's like you know Brian Gionta perfect position map. Olson threw up if I wanna stop there okay. You start me any harm you can't remember what you just said you know I can't reiterate what you just said. In the defense as a yes prepare the players that we expect to be. Responsible. Are responsible. That's after. The players that we expect to be defensively responsible in our zone. Are still not getting it done. I'll show you a clip later on that we expect. Our top pairing defense we expect our top defensive forward. To be better and to be stronger people ask people ask right now why are we that team that's getting forty plus shots a game. I'll show you a clip later on I think we're gonna do an 11 o'clock we're gonna break down a couple goals. I'll tell you why this team is where there. And it's not because of the offensive zone. The last number of years buffalo has has struggled. Offensively. I don't believe. Were looking at this team that we struggle offensively I think that we are up 30 penguins in the first period that's not struggling offense absolutely not you know you're getting you're getting goal output from Ryan O'Reilly postal Jack eichel is absolutely. On fire yet samurai and hurt wrists the line and home. 39 points. 39 points as a defenseman he is he's. Getting it done a standard Cain. Brian Gionta Molson for you know 1212 and fourteen goals I mean. We are getting. Gold production from a lot of a lot of players on the team I don't think that is an issue moving forward. I think that this team moving forward is get. I I didn't did I mention now outpost almost almost twenty goals I mean. This team moving forward. Is going to get stronger offensively. Because the were were. We don't I'm young I'll nutter is some young pups that are getting it done already. But IE I would see moving forward that these guys are gonna get even more comfortable more confident moving forward offensively you the issue with this hockey team. No word of a lie is is in the defense's own case I actually signed Jack cycle all year long. And I'm picking on a young guy who's his second year in the National Hockey League. And I'll tiger right now there or right being older veterans you can be packing I did pick on a whole bunch of guys on this team I mean just watching the clips and you know when you sit there and watch in real time you're watching the sabres game at night and your TV your drink and a couple cocktails and you know your kids talking in your one year in year this not you're not really focused and I'll never forget this you've heard this a thousand times. Video never lies sword guy who actually goes back and watches the tape and watches the goals in the breakdown of what's happening. I mean defensively. This team is not very good. In 03055888552550s. There. Call here we got Matt in buffalo Matt you're on the line and Andrew Craig on WGR 515 amnesty go ahead. Normal criteria. I have are I just an honest question it and maybe again and they get inside the out of work. Where did you doubt who decides. This starts coming back in but he had the current. Coaching. Because I have a real question as to. I don't get real life that this team missile the independently. And that when they play the offensive team and their fore checking like there's no tomorrow there's a good. Shall go to whenever they like toxic gas in the city and they do that when they laughed again. They stink. Horrible. I just I don't understand why did it it team leadership. That just as they bought the people put on again here. You know we all the Olympics in an amateur at ski portion that he portion or a coaching being critical to say it anyway. The concert shell let's try to shut down. I think it doesn't matter amending the way they think so but instantly. And analytic chart beat that game there they're. It. Was. Okay. River. It's tough in our case sort also also this. I've been on both sides when you've players on your teams. As Matt just mentioned you know talking about. Keeping your you know your foot on the gas and all that stuff and you know I hear all analyst keeper for the does regard sixty minutes we'll. Whatever my point is is that not everybody in that locker room knows how to do it yet. Here you're very you're very very bang on lake. You can see that stuff. To moon. Ryan are two even Gergen sins to Lori Bailey. Rodriguez. Maybe Marcus is starting to get it and figured out you can see it the Jackie can sing it to fall McCabe. If it takes it takes years. It takes sometimes Steve bought say years ago when he was captain of this team on this radio show. It sometimes takes three your 400 games for guys to be com and learn how to be consistent. Regularly consistent. Understand how to play the game how this is only people think oh it's hockey quote play hockey through the park on that you know. It's not like that there is a need there is a there's a ways that you go about learning how to play the game at each and every level at higher levels and once you reach the highest level. It takes years to figure out. Howell. And why you do certain things why you make certain plays wide literally one step to the left can be the difference between the part being in the back your net. Or you separating the plate it was it's no different than the play that we're gonna break down later on where it was 215 in the zone. I mean you have two young defensemen switching and they probably were switching because they knew they were supposed to switch but they they know how they were supposed to switcher which I was supposed to take who. Or maybe they weren't supposed to switch at all and they did. That goes that all goes along with part of trying to. To. Teach players how to play in the defensive zone. The defensive zone is the hardest. It's hardest the single hardest area of the game to learn how to play and not only that it's the single hardest way. Hurt our area in the game to teach. Young players adamant scores their whole life how to buy it and learn and accept that that is a huge responsibility. And you have to run. Yet to switch around in my. So reality is this. It's easy. To go on offense. That's the fun part that's that eat that takes you back to the outdoor rinks when your kid with an airplane Cheaney hockey's with your body. And you can do anything that you wanted and not get scolded for time trying to toe drag your put the puck through your skates and then when the puck went down the ice. And Cheney hockey you know what you did. In back Jack up the impact your way to kind of discretionary pick yeah Amanda Miller Park. But here the reality is is you know. This team needs to be much better defensively. There's a reason why they lose hockey games and it's not the offensive zone. I don't believe it's the goaltenders I believe that it's their defensive play. In their defensive system lacks a tremendous amount of hockey awareness the game winning goal were walking in here all I mean. There there's there's breakdown there's breakdown in and you know obviously Sam Reinhart. You know these are. These are played one all wine you cannot allow a guy on to the inside. In a scoring chance and he gets beat to the back of an actor backside by Conor shear in this can happen. Why is wider Schultz. That wide open to be able to even make this place because there breakdown their breakdown all over the ice. There's an end. That we point of view brutally point we point to the guy that scores the goal who was the last guy who's mammoth that. There was Sam runners but that the thing is wise McCabe going out to the the left wingers. Defenseman wise left Winger so far away from his man. Why I mean it's just it's it's it's collective and colossal. That that takes place in the defense's own and and one little breakdown leads to a guy losing his man behind him I mean it's. It's as simple as that it's a five man breakdown I mean you even talked about the the player earlier on I mean the McCain even risk the line in. On the on the goal that was not that did not cross the line by the way which I thought it from different angles that may have crossed but that's whatever and that's what it probably gave high stick goal. But my point is is that even even Ryan O'Reilly gets caught flat footed they're because of the breakdown that happens in the in the game obviously Warner. Like I mean there's there's there's a tremendous amount of defense of lapses. For the sabres they are not strong defensively. When this team gets the pock faced it they're start to become a dynamic hockey team offensively. And that's the best defense their best defense is actually playing in the offensive zone so when you're up three nothing I don't understand why you're sitting back why you would change. A system I think that you would want that pushed the pace even more. And and put more pressure on their defense in their forward to make plays but there's just far too much time in space. Given to a leaked players on Pittsburgh and they just. Literally wore them down pick them apart and you know and a winning game four. And 03055888550. To 550 couple things coming up Warhol gonna join us at 1020. Talk about a People's Bank event that she has going on. Also at 1030 kinesis college coach golden Griffin's coach Steve Smith will be in studio with us we can talk them a lot of things called hockey. Talk about system and for those of you out there that. That always hear the word system and they're just like oh here they go talking about system we'll talk to a coach today about systems we mean we as players and discusses. At length and can bore you but we'll hear from a coach about switching systems changing systems what exactly. Is a system that they talked about let's covered call here on the line let's grab who is this. Barely an Alden Billy. Early on line to. And what's up I think we're in the outlook Visio on thank you very much quick comment about yesterday's game all of that hit that Branson had in the corner when he does grant began chucked out. That was the first time all year when I think he had like that dire numbers being secular mentality Reid wanted to like. But by the throat and then at some that was kind of nice to see nice deep breath and taking over a little bit. And I hit my quick comment is where's that mentality. That was supposed to have. On the third period because when Malkin was. Circling our net income and all the way around all the way in front I putted good over what. But I did I remember even five years ago somebody with just taking it had all. It used to in that arm is that is that as much oh maybe art scene but fidelity or maybe that game and it becoming less physical I get. That's kind of like what these guys because our mentality is not there are but I know that a lot of that is just that we're young and we're getting better and growing as a team but we don't seem like we have a killer instinct like you wanna destroy the other team. And I think sabres hockey for a long hike in rubber has been let's just go out there. And basically destroy them and dominate them and we done that for years and lately. Are at all but I. I think I would and I think I think we get it comics oval orbit their team not Robert physical his liking also welcome as dominant last lesson. Well obviously he was dominant because you when you give an elite player time and space woody expect when you give time and space to Sidney Crosby. Time and space to Sidney Crosby I don't care if you think that you're guarding your guy he's gonna make plays that are gonna make your head spin. In order to an order to. Take away. This space. I'll be lead players it means you have to be on them and and in anticipate. That there even gonna get the park the last time that these guys have the pock. The last time they are going to make that they're not to make plays and right now. I mean this team is too passive in the defensive zone they need to be. Much more aware of the responsibilities. They need to know who's on the ice. They need to know where the person is and they need to attack this player and take away the time and space when they do get the puck. They don't have time to actually make pic looks to make a great place an end. That there was far too it was almost like the sabres were just kind of really. Going after player but not really going atom and the guy that needs to support that player was kind of late and he was always eat. It's not least unions is just. They don't play. They don't play strong physical aggressive. Hockey in the defense is they're far far too soft. Isn't that is not part of the of a defensive assignment as like finish your checks through the park. I don't know I would say finishing the check I think you have to in this game because the puck moves so quickly that the old days of drive the guy through the board is over you have to be able to pick your spots on when to lay that body check. But it's a bowl closing clip quickly you look at a lot of the defenseman. There's been a big change and in the style of defense in the last couple years. The players are not nearly as big not nearly as mean as aggressive because the park in the puck movement is so quick. You'd need of defensemen that are match I'll and that can read plays that have great hockey I Q that can close on on on. Those are offensive players to give less time and space and then once you have him you need to be strong the other guys that don't have the pock. You need to be on the defensive side and you need to make it very difficult to get into that scoring. That's that's that's the game hockey. It's not the stuff played on the outside it's the stuff that every team works the puck around to get scoring chances in the house. As we call it the house is a vote at 810. Foot radius in front of the net that's the scoring zone 88% of all goals are scored in that. In the house you'd need to protect that house and you need to do a better job protecting it and I don't think the sabres do they're just not strong and operate now. Erin calls in the house but not our house she's at keybank senator she's in that house and she's down with the people's sink event going on down at the rink soul. Let's walk him Lauren policy and tell us more about what's going on there from keybank senator good morning Lauren. Case in morning beating back up your money off to a good start ours is here. Dave Smith tenacious hockey golden Griffin's coach will be where let's talk a lot about him his his program. And we'll talk about sabres were the two systems what are these systems and all these people talked about. Moreover when we return WGR Sports Radio 550 chemistry. We're back with more of the instigated it's presented by MP Carol hardware. Welcome back to the as gators Andrew Peters fragrant bay and joined with a special guest friend Dave Smith. Head coach of the kinesis Golding Griffin's. Here on WGR Sports Radio 550 and MSG. Sabres lose 43 last night and I'm nodding in assent a heartbreaker. It was just ugly and I we've been talking about that the first I won't talk to Dave a little bit about hockey obviously. But first. You guys are having some great success this year you guys the top of the of the conference. And playoffs have started and now you're going to be playing your rival. In Niagara University coming up this weekend I mean now I tell us a little bit about your season so far. Well thanks for having me on its it's been a great ride I mean our guys. Really. Subscribe to what were selling I mean I know that that sounds like coach speak. We were picked for ninth in our conference we finished. First. McCain right down at the last minute air force had a loss in league in the last minute that the goalie out against sacred heart to give us the the victory it was a special night expected in my kitchen but my dog you were picked ninth and you ended first yeah. Yeah that's all coaching do we keep telling people that but I don't know how many people are buying that but. Our guys are chemistry that commitment they made in the pride they have in its chemistry. The chemistry guys have the belief they have an each other. Has really carried us. Through the season the we've been we've been very hot lately we've been undefeated in the last fifteen. Are last in conference loss was. Before trump came into the into the power of the one of the presidency but. The seasonal matter they re legal matter that's coach speak but it doesn't matter I mean we decide. Niagara upset all right T they played really really well to arrive redeem everything is saying better pay attention to this weekend. Dave Smith joining us head coach of cases college going Griffin's are going to be facing Niagara University this week and it's a two to three. All of harbors honor yeah I would expect that the student body would be in foal attendance for the sought. He had us we'll have who'll have the attention of the students the one. Downside is its spring break the following week so the students that are from a distance or from out of town. Or just want to wanna get a layer going on spring break probably early but we've got some dire student pains it'll be their Fisher Niagara is well I'm sure and or how obvious played them this or how was that that rivalry this year you know what it's my call one of the games yeah recently. On television and you guys finish five to file maybe. 42 final yeah I can't remember all the exact. Hours but what was unique about playing them this year we've played them four times the last six weeks of the season. And that's rare EG a place on a team too early to late. We played them four times we know them very very well and the other piece of that is the the good hatred that goes with playing a team. This is going to be invested three series but it feels like we played them every weekend the past month the season. What is your team make up when you were if you were to describe your type of team you know every team's a little bit different. Com what's your team make up what you guys what what makes you. So good. Well the head I think we have everybody. On board I mean word word. Word deep team we've got four lines at six the and from the goal Leo it is our foundation our goalies had a tremendous year he's in graduate transfer from payers state. He's in the top three in the country and save percentage he's in the top three in the country in in goals against average film them a lot of our success starts from. The backhand so. We are committed to playing good team defense but once we get it we have a lot of pace and we pursue. Very very. How the song wanna ask you this so when you bring in new players. How hard is it and I at this translates to the NHL translates all levels because as you bring in new players they're obviously going up a level. So how hard is it too I guess. Teach them or wanna use the word by hand or get them to just understand some of the little. Tendencies that need to happen a little important things that we talk what defensive zone here with the sabres we're gonna get into that in a minute reviewed systems and all that but. How hard is it to get young players to policy body into what the coach wants to do you see were solid defensively. That requires discipline. And it requires a guest you know. The DR and selfishness of a player to come. He I think it's very difficult we were fortunate tenacious that you know when we bring in a freshman we have them for four years in the case of Charles Williams as a goaltender. He came in with a maturity. A lot of my thoughts on that question goaded you know when I played Proehl and I got traded namely guys played on and number different teams. If your core leadership as strong. A new player can command and just fall and do what everybody Phelps is doing there's very few players. That have a system better than the team's system. So I go back to an air where Bob Johnson was in the Chicago the old stadium once and Bob Johnson had written on the the chalkboard at the time the best system is the system we all do. And so for us that conditions we all buy into that system so it's not a magic system. But the player that gets put into a new situation needs to buy yen. And I think if the cultures strong then it's an easier by him for him. Andrew Peters Kregg evade joined with that I join with us or joined by Dave Smith head coach of Kenny says college golden griffons. OK so sabres dropped one last night were. You know we're talking about. Players buying in the systems and one of the of the things that any Craig and I focus on the most is. I think the team's doing pretty well offensively I think they can generate some pretty good offensive chances they are still players. But it just seems like defensively and then. You hear all these different reports about while the players aren't they don't understand the system or they don't play the system more. What in your mind can you explain to the listeners or viewers a guest. Well how many different systems as Craig mentioned are out there for coach I mean. We as players only see what the coaches Telus but as system is it's the one to two it's how you play in the defensive zone I mean. What's your system and what it what system received from the sabres. I think he just asked me and Monday before the playoff weekend telling everybody will take all eyes that don't you tell talk about the sabre system but yet but isn't it it's kind of like well. But I hear this that the comment of while the players to understand the system I think. How is that even possible. Come to me. I we use a Cole in our program the teacher will appear when the student is ready. I do think that the inexperience. Some of the buffalo players. Hurts because. Hurts to end result because there's a lot of variables that go Wii and to a system the variables. Are the individuals that play in this system so. Most systems I'm sure you guys played in that we played there is room for flexibility. But what you do with that flexibility leads to the next phase of a system. So we're breaking the pocket I'll. If we can be predictable weakened play faster. Predictability. Also helps the other team shut you down. If you're too predictable. Those are the nuances that allow a team to win or fort raced to a park that allow you to take away the time and space which you guys all know is everything in the defensive zone. So I I can't tell you that this systems at any level are too complicated. But the variation that variations of that that individual players make ball defensively and op sensibly and the stick position. Both take years and years to master to. At the highest level. Well so we were talking about like how one foot or two feet of a player. To laughed when he should be a little more to the right can absolutely open up a lane. And it's just very simple duo as a place to play last night where and he knows the player was but it fits well Connor. The car share aren't sure oh game winning goal on samurai and hurt pat Connors Jiri high up in the offensive zone. Connor sure he made his play. Two that defense that the talk and then started to drive the net. Sam Ryan hearts. Knew where his man was but. Loss coverage for a split second and in the National Hockey League. A split second means that there's a goal opportunity. And unfortunately on this play for Sam this puck was in the net this is what we're talking about this is awareness on the ice. This is being defensively responsible. Arm and and this is this is how you win or lose hockey game. And this is is is this is as a result that gave of of Dave Smith joining us from finish his college head coach of the golden grass. Is this a result of a system players not playing a system that to me I I view this is. Individual breakdown at many different spots with them defensive zone I don't I don't see this as a systematic issue I see this as players just not. At securing properly. Yet and I those small little piece that cop my guy there two things one is how much time that. The shooter the guy that made the pass how much time and space he had. With the clearly into the net the drew somebody else I think Riley was at net front year old Riley over crystalline and Timor or. And there was enough time is space for that guy to make a play the second thing I noticed was. Reinhart new. Exactly what happened after the goal win and and to me right his body like his body language said new Garnett missed I made a mistake. And I I love watching Sam Reiner plays we break down almost all of the sabres games or video guys Josh grazer will Geary. And we watched them and I believe that Sam Reinhart self corrects a lot and he sees those things if he makes that mistake a year from now two years from now. He he's not as valuable to this team that is hockey sense is great. He knew it in the split second he needed to notice what second earlier so I think dole is our. Individual breakdowns. In this system but one mistake in the National Hockey League can cost you. Right to mistakes is almost always a goal and to me and that clip there was Tuesday. Com Dave Smith joining us head coach of cases college called Griffin's hockey team. Going to be playing. Nagger university this weekend at the harbors and if you want a seat good hockey fast hockey. Very physical hockey and passionate hockey. That's for you wanna goes hottest team in the area right now on the law was Eugene receivers for awhile back in October November December but you guys pistol under. What do you think right now about the sabres where they're headed how they're playing. Yeah I mean. Last night was tough result I mean your plane Pittsburgh but they are showing the good things that fans oneness. Yet and and I wanna be careful again I'm I'm in the business and and I I love the CB I love watching the sabres and any criticisms that I have are still from a fan's perspective even though all we break the games down and we have a a coaching. Viewpoint. We're not in the locker room we don't know what the challenges that they're facing the little the bombs the bruises that. You know I can talk about our team's success we had a guy come back from injury. And we put him on the third line at the same time we being call a guy apt as we don't have that but we put him from out of the lineup into the first line. And that. Connected which put everybody in the right slot. The first line guys were first line guys so when I watched the sabres. Sometimes. I wonder what's happening because guys are owed of their slot there there there. They're correct chemistry their position so they're being asked to do things that might be either out of their experience level. Or out of there comfort level and his skill set. I called on limitations. You everybody has to understand your limitations you can ask a certain player players see who's a third line player. To go to the first line and expect to play likened a player day. He just doesn't have the limitations because he's played a certain style to get there maybe a coach should say. More than just that just has to play with these guys don't change your game because. It's so hard and so hard PD because I mean. Our role I know how all I heard that a lot dame that's all I'm saying that don't change your game now he can there's something about making chicken salad there's a saying around I noticed that these guys the game's changed in terms. He'd. He can't have any wasted ship she can't have negative accorsi players she can't have those advanced statistics but you still have to play the gains and sometimes a C player. Condit why why this year he's scoring a game winning goal of having such success with cries that you couldn't predict that there isn't a coach he could predict it. It happened once. So the coach rolls with it. And what I see with the sabres as they're trying different things trying to find that chemistry I see it with player moves I see it with coaching line juggles. And and I like it because if things aren't connecting. Personally I'm not gonna sit idly and watch. Things not work I'm gonna try and make changes and I see the effort we watched him in practice when we can what you see in the game the efforts there it's just the chemistry. Isn't smooth right now is is all. Little details small little details things. I mean they don't need to go in trade away a bunch of guys and bring in new guys their small little details that I think can can make this team. Chemistry happening right here Adam tweets and I love what I'm hearing hearing right now this is my favorite segment of the investigators in a long time. That is that's all you. Dave that's all of this if you wanna stick around for another segment here yet another segment are great we're gonna take a break here when we come back more from. Dave when we return Dave Smith head coach of the thesis college golden Griffin is there an action this weekend against Niagara university at the harbor senator. Great hockey go check it out will be the will be right back here in the it's gators WGR Sports Radio 515 amnesty. We're back with more of the instigated it's presented by MP Carol hard. Welcome back yes gators enter Peters Craig evade it's actually 1052. That's it's that's this is your moment and to shine Dave Smith in the house WGR Sports Radio 515 amnesty a lot of people like what we had to. We had talked about there in the last segment I wanna ask you this why what is that you love so much to a San minor. IQ and compete I love those two aspects of the game he has the skills. When you start expand after IQ and compete he sees it he goes today. Hard years she goes to net and who played a PP net trying to take a bomb. They get his body matures and as his experience level goes up he's a difference maker in this league who else on this team I mean aside from Michael who. Who who else on this team do you watch insane backers are a really good hawk for I think they have a lot of really good hockey players I think. In in my opinion. It's a great compares and on the heels of a game last Saturday it's Pittsburgh. Sidney Crosby is the hardest worker he's a perennial all star he has he Leet skills and he sets the standard. Number two is small and one of the best players in the world so the standard are veteran guys that have been through the battles and been through the the trenches of what it takes to succeed. At that level when they were down three nothing last night Pittsburgh didn't try to score three goals they try to get one. And they just stuck with the game plan stuck with who they are. And I believe the sabres have some of those guys I think Evander Kane is a guy who. Plays the same way all the time you know what you're gonna get from Ryan O'Reilly from Reinhart from Michael. A little bit the youth there with I call and Reiner but. We'll explain to me what we're talking mode at the break we're talk about Sidney Crosby and why. All these young youthful players come into that line up. And it and it looks like they've been there for years. I mean they feel very comfortable they start to have instant success. Why is like that theory like issue theory car sharing comes anyplace on the line as Sidney Crosby most people would be. You know terrified dead to be in that situation but why is it that these guys from Pittsburg how of these no name players coming in their line up enough. Success well to me to me and I think fans and media set goals for the team whether they're talked about or not is so you know receivers we expect them to be in the place we set a goal to be in the playoffs. To me the development of the sabres organization has to do with comparing them to Pittsburgh. Is the standard of excellence which the veteran guys. It's it's it's more of them they just have. When Sidney Crosby's so Chris Kuhn its is college teammates have my assistant coach Trevor large. Chris Kunis describes Crosby as he comes back harder and farther in the defensive zone than anybody else and he as he meets skill on the challenges as teammates. But he doesn't do it with words he does it. With the way Asia and place as the standard of excellence which is repeated day after day after day. And he's been on a mission he's a treat to watch he's the best player in the world. I I completely forgot yesterday the sabres at 5 o'clock you know slipping tonight I'm Mike he was made because I got to watch it because you know gold president and I got to watch the sabres play. For work. But I got to watch Sidney Crosby in and I gotta tell it. There was a time where I would've rather handle that and because of the flash in the player in the way he played he was energetic electric they're back ten years ago. And then Crosby because he was the Weiner and he was. The kind of this hockey BV's superstar and he ever since that ranger series a few years ago when they went out in five games. And all of sudden he is completely put the whining away. And he has been as you mentioned just a man on a mission and a treat to watch. And that's why every player that steps in like this year you coup and tackle all these other kids that come in. Because they see the way the greatest works and they don't wanna let him down like. It's like playing for Tom Brady why didn't get the most of these months because they don't wanna let the guy down and he brings the most out of their ability I mean. Because if you drop the passes in practice you're knock in a plane. It's environment. It you know whether they're they're being brought into an elite environment Sidney Crosby is not a player that cut corners. Even though he's the most skilled hockey player offensively in the world. He plays the lead defense so how do you get this out of your college kids because it sounds like that's the success you're having a mean who's that guy in your team that that brings that element to the rink everyday risen by committee is human. Well I see postings on the savers to like I think Brian Gionta is unbelievable. I can see how he carries himself around the rank for us the comparison would be Jeff Foreman who's a senior number six defensemen where's the sea for us. And the way he speaks to the players is like a coach so we have. A fourth year player that nobody else but we actually have a fifth year player and Charles Williams but nobody else has. Anybody over the net. Fourth or fifth year player so there's a cap so when you put Sidney Crosby in his tenth year eleventh here whatever year he's in. That veteran experience and you have to stack those guys Chris Kuhn its has on that team. He's corporately good leader and you just you need all of those guys to have that Italian art very multiple Stanley cups their standard of excellence. Is not talked about it's just what they do and who they are. And I believe the sabres are on that path it is like watching O Reilly compete watching. Reinhart those guys are he leaked competitors Josh Georges as those in the elite competitor. Crystalline and is getting some of that so to me as a fan. With some hockey. Background. I see there on the right path that we as spectators want it to happen now so to mean stayed of course stay the course keep believing in your guys keep pushing them for the standard of excellence that posed a tunnel bows and it. Talked our guys did a shorter Stanley Cup ring he he knows what to do. But he can't do he can't play he continues to hold accountable those coaches work their tails up and those players are bringing it. Do you think must question for relaying your Dave Smith joining us appreciate your time. Do you think that Gionta should be back next year which you bring him back absolutely. Absolutely what's his role. I think is a different question but I want on the ice or role as a leader role on the server role on the nice to meet he kills penalties he can play. And and I see his maturity he's he's been through the trenches and heat. We'll share that through his play and his body language his demeanor on a daily basis to these young guys who need. Come back again next week sometime soon to back anytime I learn about all the can you guys do a great job crazy week with trade deadline and everything and but we're happy to get him thanks for coming in Dave Dave Smith good luck this weekend big weekend coming up against Niagara. Kinesis nagger we'll head to head and two or three. At the harbor setter so go check it out. Dave Smith thank you for joining us is to gators more with Gregory and educators when we return.
