He's Mike Hsu over the bulldogs. Hi there thank you very much thank you. It's Mike Shields could give yourself. Great time for yourself around. now good job for you guys. And Bulldog. Hey let's I know it was coming knows. Pretty warm. Gravy pizza Mike Hsu from the bull dog carrier. Chickens are done. WGR. I welcome back. Joining us now on the eighteenth line is the man many consider the greatest catcher in baseball history Johnny Bench. Johnny Mike and Chris here we're thrilled to have you can we call you Johnny. please cut going to mr. of them that are bought. Or Mike in chris' final thought Reggie Jackson I don't even know if you like him but he was Electorate but as he called Bulldog crazy do that when it was they like to go out and yourself go up and bring it. Us and so you're on your darker beautiful weather. You're on your way up here for a card show in Batavia and that we're talking today about how you played in buffalo that some of listeners will remember what do you remember about playing up here. Well I don't remember my first trip I was I got called up from. The Carolina league and You know I'd had done enough. If he called up from buffalo from Hampton Newport News plant the great. And target on just about to get called up and it's the biggest crowd overseas missed the union. Some union of them will that unions come around and for that day they all come to the ballpark in war memorial and hope I get pretty exciting I mean there's only twenty some thousand people would be most other applicable for. So the game starts out in the third of all the bald elements on the it. 66 clear. Right that's the story why you only played one game that year. This happened. I think that is beginning to let it became the of the dugout until my thumb and president broken record point. I loved buffalo and then of course the next year was. One of the I guess it was too you know growing up period for me I don't think that was the real. Maturation process on Johnny Bench. I'm nineteen years old I'm involved with the dammit to upload the big stigma and the duke Carmelo world. Of the world them. You know I'm still here I'm just in the early nineteen and then. So they. You know swearing in the bottom number there pull hitter and and the guys are completely dumb and the advantage of buffalo took some. He rewarded that curve ball and then we would go up to the poor and are too early. And they were the only curve ball curve ball curve ball. And there was. It was a real eye opener just one of those things where. Veteran players. You know. Took you gave me some advice and I think that was always the case for me the rest of my career was when we had. Young kids were there live picture of him killer whoever. Try to give them some guidance and some help just for the you know what you feel comfortable he got compliments go up television wouldn't be that I think it is you should understand that you know slow things down a little bit. the ball well. And you know look if you're good enough you'll be you'll be playing for law. You mentioned some names from your. Eisenstein Don Zimmer was on that team was in a letter. I was Jim Joseph. The the loop with Joseph was the manager when I got there. He was funny guy who he was really good. Really enjoyable. And really knowledgeable. And we didn't play too well for the replacement phone number. And then became my close friends ever coming. I have a baseball but on my favorite player ever. That was kind of special court you know buffalo was you know football Became famous later on with a natural wasn't. And then of course the riots came. And so with came. Part of our move over to Niagara Falls. And we have drive across the Niagara fall and we play at all. Arnold football field with the the line. Drawn. Into the field and there were still there. And we. They put up a temporary fences with smoke and and we played until we're. You know for nineteen years old and and I hadn't come had an expert in the major leagues so and you know you never know what the field in this matter like that. There was little. We are wonderful and really was because we're good to me. a lot of great. Guys who had. Guys do it had some success in the Major League teams. And but I'm sure they you know they were then either going back up they're never gonna win a major would you again go. But it was it was delightful woman you've got to maturity go to. You know you gotta have the experience you're gonna help them and all of these guys with fuel cost and Bob sky period. boom boom and fuel of playing Gilbert so. I'm duplicate I you know I think it it sets stage for me that. To be comfortable. Wasn't put down I wasn't talked down to learn a thing I was included in the can. Now Johnny I'm I'm curious talking with John minutes here on WGR. I I I'm I'm wondering if if you can talk a little bit about what it was like to be nineteen in buffalo you mentioned already coming here the big crowd like what. What what was the city like for you coming here from where you had been prior to that. And done like what what kind of impact did it have on you with any. You know her early on in your development. Well I'm still economic group Mattel and 600 people football like I was you know. Used to big city did you know in Tampa of course so please bear management training their so. You know I had a little bit of that but felt that from the department over on the commemorative. COLT can more apartments that Obama. It's been. It was a apartment building at one time. Mobile removed it was a movie theater I burn down. And apartments and shall we lived there mediate who restaurant across the street which I was good enough for him that it has so many times and remember the name. But there was a little Italian joint we used to go there that was one. Was kind of nice restaurant bar that was most of the guys went through so it was it was close to those that. You know I didn't go far. You know They dialed me and I had myself I haven't heard so responsibly so. I really wasn't a drinker on the so. I just basically. It might as that's what to do every day you don't mind you know I'd have pilots who would do this stuff or to the ballpark. Played the game in the back of arrest them. So far beyond that but I couldn't tell you a whole lot about the city except it was a people really nice to me and of course you know however having all you know relocate over the Niagara Falls. We've been most of her time traveling and we'd have to go over the earlier about the good to have hit the ball park across from them. And we have to want to get back over my right so. No there wasn't too much in the way of you know anything can kick me out of my my comfort level that will change my life. Johnny Bench with us on the AT&T hotline you mentioned how Don Zimmer signed a ball to view. Naming you his all time favorite player who was your all time favorite player. Lawmaker medal. A group we have Oklahoma. And was you know. It was the Oklahoma man own course in those days it was like you know if you watched the game on television on you know what do you being them. Period ever Kirby was it was just you know most of the games that they show were New York Yankees so. On who are playing grateful we were sitting there being a bullet in my bed and let him talk about how he can hit and every one of those pitchers and balcony is that ball give it back at that in on. it wanted to make Major League catcher hit serve but he served who have served in the war. And so he never got a chance but he was open one of his would. catching him and maybe fulfill a dream that you know he never got to a be apart so for me it was a you know an acceptable the norms. I've pitched alive for Roy and those conformity. So I was moved on the radio was there before and three. Like pitching feel pretty good. But right now over kept coming out would that I would it's a bottle of a lot of work permit I would again pillar of the characters moved out of what we broke. It was it was so amazing that the way it turned out. There's a story and Wikipedia about you with Jim Maloney do you know what it is the story. I wish I would have wanted to come to a Wikipedia was actually your ago. It it was a woman that you know we played better I think we played very directly fifteen innings. Left the ballpark to go to bed at 300 basketball market And I'm still catching don't like him enough in the sixth inning and I'm still out there catching them through. On this stretch where prop 54 days in a row without a bill. And I'm just one Arlington why in the world must go out here. You know let somebody else's for a few innings but. And whoever developed in the nothing in the ranger in that left him with a really good curve ball. And I'm trying to get out you know out of the giving it felt like them that only trickling over Pope pressed forward and ensure it smelled like oh fastball again usually help. Because there are a little to curb our blog called curveball three and it's certainly OpenId is the largest oil and drove a fastball. And it was outside and a way Emma and other I just don't go to a good. I was Does that Goldberg. He he stood out there we have a cooperate America put his hand over hand the retarded just twisted like a bit like he was pulling out his art. But it went like my great to race and so I just kind of parts and tools racism and I looked over and there was you could not see any of the Dodgers in the dugout they were all on the floor. Am. It. You know. That there's so many things edit does the slip and that was one government I didn't even think about that I did happen Is that going to be target. And under over the I have deficit holdover from Baltimore you've heard these stories. But I'm standing there was with Milt Pappas and he's you know he's just hit rock them of the single double monitoring all the bubble and Dave the manager. He comes out of the dugout and I don't know felt there and I sort of walked out the amount of character useful can do them. And I I give the amount about the same time Dave does and they look over me and has held neutral. And milk and blank though he hadn't called one. And it got it happened. But you know I've. I can't you know I've I would about you know realism for free agent draft. And you know would have liked Yankee I guess but the cubs were. The cub scout loved me more than all other shall I thought I would be a couple of turned up that. To become Cincinnati rhythm and wind up now. Playing on the greatest thing to have some consider the history of the of the game so. I was blessed to be on the team where everybody no matter today. You've almost still could walk up the main Yes and. If they were ridiculously low with a cup but we really respect that you guys so. They loved it the way we play them you know it kind of it's still a good feeling to those people respected the way but let's put it. I don't or our audience by proving to you that I can name alignment but out. Fifteen minutes before you joined as I did any baseball fans resulted in their lineup. And you guys travel I mean there are five of you scheduled to be a Batavia. A national shows Johnny were like the whole lineup is there. Yeah we've we've been lucky I mean most of our guys who have a federal born Obama's past that. Or is of course gone but. Joke and have a lot of problem opening it makes it we're. You know he's problem being able to travel on. So you know. It really is cruel mean you know about. guys together you know how many people just in the other day were sitting in the back of and former Cleveland them. And we were standing there and all of a sudden here comes you know. Through the steeler players who come to know a couple of guys and we all have and I bigger picture with yard think take a picture with you guys. But it was really cool our attitude is Cooper made mean Joseph green in his mind and his. You know and other immaculate reception and I was just so it you know we still have a respectfully so it was kind of cool to know that you know. We still have those guys that you know they grew up I want to us as well. As a kid I can remember you who those reds teams duking it out. With the Dodgers for the division. Of course 35 I think he won the division by twenty games this that we duking it out. But they seemed to me again as a ten year old kid they were your main rival I'm wondering. How old you guys felt about one another and as the years have gone by would it was at a fierce rivalry for you guys or was it just playing ball. It was really just flam ball it was unlike you don't plan against the par tiger wouldn't fight every series the was apart those guys. And and you know what what I tell people like that you have no idea how good apart from the Phillies and Dodgers were. I mean they were unbelievably good and yet because of nobody gave them you know I have a lot of respect. But cute you know you have to win another game over a hundred games in those days. We did and you know Hillary games it seemed like it we just you know. That was our job I mean we we hear that will be down a couple runs in the sixth seventh and we knew we're gonna win and they knew we were gonna win. So it just you know was such. And he you know labor of love like guests to go to the ballpark and have the type players that we have and of course. With with great leadership Tony impeded. Mean we covered the gamut we have eleven the blacks we had the we have the you know but everybody. You know like we took a picture their all the white guys you don't say kidding me guys because. Nobody knew what color me what was we were we were grateful players and nobody ever even considered. Anything about it except the fact that we were all Brothers. And even today when we all get togethers just like we walked back into the locker room. And help people that say that they don't get along they don't do this and all that stuff I just can't believe it. When you know you you're able to play the game your love. And any player with such great talent great athlete. I mean you don't look forward to go on little and and then it was just something that still today we solution we really appreciate effectively chosen what we accomplished. Give story before you go about that car that you were in a just on Twitter yesterday the anniversary of what was your last home run yeah it was a it was Johnny Bench day and all that I whenever we saw the picture of the is an old T bird with a number five on the door and that we're wondering I was wondering like you got to keep that car. And allied didn't they gave me a ball collectible most of this is really cool you are right around the ballpark in the 55 Q You know double of course and that and it like wondered they're gonna give this to me. And of course forgotten about that are marvelous plan for the red. And they also looked over a nickel we get a better grip so lies ahead Tucker forgot about that pretty quick but. You know I. I would I ask in all I ask him during the week or so what kind of ticket sales we got have a large crowd. And he can go right drive 40000 which really cool and then it turned out to be. 55 felt it was. You know walked out on my carpet and to realize you know what you're doing and then you know to be able to go home run. In and one of my favorite thing who is doing the broadcast from Joseph would not and you could hear him cry. And and it was just you know it meant so much to me because the love that I have for the people I played with all those years. And don't Bill Dickey came to the to a game. And it came to the party afterwards and now that it is. The very you know I've only time I get river on the land here and everything else is you know you don't run and run around the you do this posted keep your head down. And the court should you know it wasn't like we had a real obvious premium for the never existed so not like it is story. It it was the one time we're told me I was playing a game that was for for me and for all of those fans who elected individually. I could I could do something a little bit different we're we're out of the race. And so for chamber to just go ahead and let you know everybody in that mode that ballpark and stadium. That was the coolest thing in the world news for them to come and watch me. And good on the appreciation neither of them and then they hit a home run for the but I was trying to hard. We get the car so bad if you're playing now Jeter you give presents from every team. I don't like you did the president river's name. Well. I have a cable car bell from December reporter from. Saint Louis on gut Europe. I didn't get a lot of stuff yeah. I decided in June that I was gonna do it and turned out the beta you know I just looks one day and I. I'm working mother I Love Lucy returned them and fifteen Beijing Games out of I would. Earning my money and I wasn't playing like invention. So I made the decision is in the line went see Blue Thunder with Tom Newman. Walked movie and I would. I'm amateur. And it on the normal best friends ever. and other. Is going to camp would like to mention more John Elway called me. He was contemplating retirement you know the other for developments that well one thing you don't want to do you don't wanna hang on Politico you can't play. And then you're gonna try to prove to everybody can I but when you can't play like John Elway anymore. There and then at the most of which are still playing with like Ottawa. He's a guy running preferable in my life is that I got 300 pound linemen chasing down across the field. I mean that's good athlete you know that we're now seeing him get in the game in all sports and so. You know he made the decision boy and of course it was a pretty good form with a suitable. If I guess. Well what a treat for Ross Johnny thank you and I hope we have a great time in Western New York this weekend. And I look forward to about that are actually laughed hard from buffalo won by the war memorial stadium ballots field and they still have this problem. all about it vital part of my little. Events that are crucial many kids and who really cool but. And I would have would have liked to have gone back him one time court says so what's the natural and think about. You know. What it meant to be you be a part of that and how much buffalo meant to me to really reduce stepping stone for me to get to the Major to say on behalf of liberty here thanks again here are. Johnny Bench at the Batavia downs gaming facility Saturday from 130 to three. Will be signing. Also scheduled to appear according to the website the purple people leaders dot com Pete Rose Tony Perez is Ken Griffey and George Foster. Nothing on here of boats. Morgan the bench said while popular. News hoping that Morgan he's got to problems and tough time traveling they were hopeful that maybe he'd be able to make it doesn't appear he's out of the schedule Cesar Geronimo is consolidate Eric Davis. Promote later. Later reds teams. All of Eric Davis for a ball above all else face. On the mayor's first pitch one of the worst first pages easier to davis' face awesome. Super col Paul Hamilton on the sabres after sports here on WGR. Eights pole Hamilton's. And Hillary go the sabres are in training camp which opens up. Our season of talking to Paul Hamilton about them exciting. Even coming off a year of 26 or should be 21. And 61. I I'm still excited said earlier I'm even more excited because they think. The sabres have a better chance this year than usual than any other current NHL team of reaching their goal. Just say it's their goal last. Accuracy of that and not everybody over there would even think that but. able to those on the AT&T hotline and today already. There was some talk about playing for the draft players and Ted Nolan poll asked about. Just what the goals are this year I'm sure all the guys like you tried to put it in nice ways you know. Getting to what they're going to be Drew Stafford set up apologize if we win I'm good that they're the guys so if you YouTube do you view this as a competitor is definitely you if you should not feel compelled to do that what I told you you know. When I'm slide the media portion of me out of the way and just know aren't the little kid in me the fan is here. I can't say that the team and root against them but you know with the game's over they've lost I can say I couldn't justify its okay. They lost that probably good for them it was well while the game's going on. It's king I just can't parents they thought geez you're kidding me the averages or not particularly on Edmonton. You know back into things so let's just not in me when I've when I have my fans have gone. One of many things he'll have to adjust or that you may want to adjust. Edmonton vets now big game the shipments and it was perfect games pocket that's been the boss and games. Notes the everything how do you anticipate. Nolan. If he can use this to his advantage. At recognizing that it's a long time ago. But I think fans who are hoping still for them to be better than people like many of us are talking about them being. Will point to and taking what was of course a team with an unbelievable goaltender Patrick but still pretty rag tag roster. And winning the division and idle for a fact he used. Wedge that was between and like to his advantage in that locker room in those days like not that he would use. Murray specifically but. They don't think any good let's go show them that kind of stuff do you anticipate Nolan banging that drum pretty fiercely. Or slow losing is not in his vocabulary again. And it was interesting while the way he talked about draft picks that day you wanna see you. Every year by fifty dot com article reporters period in quarry had about it out draft picks and kind of just altar on new. And there are the unknown men and he he's more in two Word and he's kind of I think he's the wildcard here because he is such a good motivate or he does get that teams that are. Some may say pretty bad all over achieved but I I just can't see him. You can't improve that much you can improve to one of the worst seasons in NHL history and then get to the playoffs the next year it is. I just can't see that happening so. Really this team can improve and still. Reach the goal fans would like them to reach and and you know be in the last place. They provide ten games maybe they won't be last place but they'll be in second last place or third last place or something like that. Ten games a lot so if this team is is better and doesn't prove you can devote. You can you can start making progress. And still be in position. The draft. Either Michael or David or at least be in that lottery I wonder. How that will feel if you'll notice that their fifth the 31 wins and one wins. Bullet looked different will feel like a better team than last year's team and then there's also talk to pull within this. That there are certain of these guys that we all will one. Two seed beat good players like. Same of each year or the line in right some of these young guys grow organs and of course go even Patrick got like will want and that's. Now we just need a quarter of their team. If there are all here but we're don't wanna see these guys look like next year the year after. They are good enough. To beyond. A top team like it's not just going to be. Mick you know it's going to be other guys too so that'll be challenging to gonna wanna see them do well but keep the winds down. Yes exactly and you compare this team to last year's team and I witnessed by a couple of guys and they did it purposely. You know talking about last year's team. Article brought it up himself. That the team and come play every night. And he offered himself but I word that there were guys who. Didn't show offered her effort was questioned some games and there are also games where guys are just going through emotions and nobody corrected me on that. And I think they believe that also and that's. I think that'll be different the the biggest thing that excites Nolan right now is the fact that this is going to be his team inherited that team last year. There's nothing you can do about it he didn't choose that team he and it was it was thrown out so he had he had to coach. He had lived through it. But now this is he gets to choose the players he gets to choose who's on the team and who's working art and who's not and who. If they're not working article back to junior Rochester type thing. He gets to decide who plays and who doesn't and who's going to be on that at that hockey team. That really excites him a lot and that's another wild card but I think the fact when we talk about is his team better. From top to bottom on defense so they're better absolutely yes they did buy out. The guy who was their best defenseman last year I don't know if that's minor isn't but still he was. And but if you top to bottom. There's no morsels there is no leader there's no more. But mean. And they in these slighted Patrick is slated crystal line and he George's. I think that makes him better on defense top to bottom. But are they better goal. And that you know Ryan Miller is here for three quarters of the year whatever that percentage was. And now it's going to be nor ever and Enron. In that so does that make them a better team when there. take quite a bit they've gone down quite a bit as far as goaltending goes maybe they're a little bit better on defense maybe they're a little bit better up front. But I think they're not better in goal so. I don't know how much that he would be better courses they said that no one wildcard. Yeah I'll bet on that talk with our Paul Hamilton he joins us here on the AT&T hotline. Sabres reported for what it physicals and interviews and that kind of thing today and on the 10 AM noon and 2 o'clock tomorrow open the public. It for Niagara senator. Paul that wild how how much different team do you think Ted Nolan. Will select from this pool players men then you know his predecessors. Some of Marty here anymore right. I land. You know he might set I don't want this guy I don't want I don't Juan told you about the resigning. I don't You know I don't want cannot want this I don't want that I'm I'm reading off names weren't here anymore and don't take that as those guys he doesn't like and his. Running off names guys in here anymore. Did you have anything to do with the buyouts Hampshire was consulted. Especially You know. to get here. There's nothing you know we can do with that I I think he was part of that now the off buyout was more. I think from costs pointed Veoh and Marie just took it hey if you wanna be here fine it was that breast anyway and go by. You know but I think that was more from Eric talks and that he would be hearing more so only accommodate him. So old. In that case I think some of the guys that he did not enjoy coaching last year are no longer even here to make a decision on. So I think. Other guys that are here maybe if he she is surprised go to Rochester that may tell you something. Overdrive it maybe did didn't like gore. A guy who's in the lineup by day one and it. Vs a guy who's sitting up in the press box that may tell you something but I think a lot of what he didn't like is no longer here. Paul Hamilton with us bulldogs said earlier that he if he had a Would bet that goes back to junior was close for you know that's that's where you landed would you do the same. I watched the tournament are are monstrous wasn't bad in the term he was what she would have expected I mean he. He was good with the puck the puck follows morality made some nice passes in the end. Credit spurred a system that wasn't his sister was army is so I'm gonna say he had no points. But a lot of other guys who are supposed to be offensive threats that have points either what I don't like is he has the tendency to take big hits. And I've seen it two or three times between. But Travers city tournament and the scrimmage were rookie scrimmage that was in buffalo he got smoked and that and that incidents. Was teammate. By the way it's still hit him wasn't he abatements scrimmage but it still. Wind him up and let him know that this is the National Hockey League. He doesn't have a man's body yet. And I just injuries. And him having trouble fighting through that. As the season goes on in my mind what is the big rock. He doesn't need to be here this year it's not like the sabres are close and a really good player who put them over the top. I don't understand. I love what Tampa Bay did last year with two rabbit they sent him back to junior and they had a good team. And still sent him back because they thought that was best for him. And I really think it might be best for ride and another year in junior especially. If losses start piling up here then you know maybe you get from the beginning of the year while employed by 67 games. Before you send him down game a little bit of taste of it. Maybe make sure from Murat that he is. Really. Above his years and you really want to keep them here but You know me I'm I'm I'm a dinosaur or whatever were to start the miners. I'm in no rush to young players up here and and I love the fact that now crystal line and loves the fact that he went to Rochester luxury he would when he went. But one of the first things they told them as he needs to get better condition and he he really took that the heart he started that immediately. Last year. You know crazy you know sought out from the sabres. Or right I wanna I wanna get leaner what do why do. And he's he's gotten in his words got rid of the baby patent. He's a lot leaner any place better for so and now says he learned a lot Rochester it was absolutely the right thing to do an added. I like the city but I don't ever wanna see it and as far as hockey player throws meaning he doesn't wanna be back in the minors again and he's doing everything he can. To avoid that so I really do like that the white players to start there. All glad to have the sabres back I'm sure you'd agree I absolutely am I love hockey of September that I might be the only one but I do. Thank you need program the only one I love that. As the curtain goes down an hour show the curtain begins to go out of the John Murphy show coming your way. Per hour tonight abbreviated because we've got Thursday night football balks at falcons coming your way. I'm still kind of little you're about haven't talked to Johnny Bench 45 minutes ago all you did I didn't know that had did you expect to hear that if you ever had a chance to meet him I'm probably talk to him I never have I watched him play for the buffalo Biden right right and I've never I've never talked he talked almost week we talked him for almost forty minutes and I think more than half of it was a bubble like we know what just just year he got here. In 66. There and brokers Wrote that the first game real early in the game he never bring up a bat he said it was a big crowd of union day at the ballpark is a huge crowd you really excited. Foul brokers dom. And that was it for the year you play if you look at respectfully one game would buffalo that year and in the following your played ninety games and if I'm not mistaken they played the ball close games in the agriculture. Our experts conflict I never knew that part don't you talk about the riots and everything that was and a course that winds up historically just guessing it's never put together. Yeah but what I what a cool he's a baseball guys in the I think like I just I'd just I'd just love blogs talk to him that's very what are you know he got we got broken tonight. I want our show because a Thursday that football but we've got Steve tasker who's he obviously knows the bills well in fact he was a practice today and he's going to be. Calling the game on the NFL on CBS Sunday afternoon so got to talk to who secrecy or from within their catalog the yeah yeah right and it's that it's his this year cool all right I wonder how I curious to hear what his thoughts on the on the chargers are certainly how was their GM yesterday called Tom telescope and yet we did. You don't part of the deal was and I when I shot him an email monitor it looked American and you about your injuries or anything because it but if we talked a lot about his background and you know grown up here being the bills here working the bills training camp is that. Training camp in for his friendship with the polian talked about the what he learned from Bill Polian and some of the other people are coming up we talked about the life of Of an NFL scout which you know he was for several years with the Indianapolis so yeah it was it was really good yes Albany is a really good guy he had their injuries public you know about their injuries are sucking and and we got added to the the report is that mean is that I don't know the as he got a pretty interesting note today with Keenan Allen now limited in practice gates still limited in practice the one that. Got my attention out two days and Melvin Ingram is not practice and I think that's when we keep an eye on two one of their. They really their best pass pressure is situation players so that their little banged up Tbilisi with an injury report looks like tomorrow. You know they travel they were probably. Fly tomorrow afternoon I would think the chargers so they're here on Saturday so that adds a little. Little more I guess. Urgency to for them to figure out what their injury situation also though they will that teams typically do that when go from wet West Coast to the east coast league they don't travel on Saturday again on Friday in recent years the become more morbid trend I this.
